In the second sentence you need a couple articles.
"Chinese" is the adjective, like "the Chinese people believed"
"the Chinese" is the noun, like "the Chinese believed"
"China" is a noun that does not require an article: "For many years China believed..."
also, it should be "a lunar eclipse" or "lunar eclipses"
